Flaky green bark with moss with bent brownish tan reeds leaning against them. The country life. The common reed, native to Massachusetts, are hollow and pliable. The first people and settlers used these reeds for thatching, mats and walls, palings and fencing, arrow shafts, fishing reeds & spears, and sewing needles & awls. The first people and settlers also used these reeds for food, the tender young shoots were cooked, the seeds ground into flour and the sap was sweet enough to extract and boil into candy. Most importantly they were used for medicine and rituals.
